Tinubu Approves ₦68 Billion for Maiduguri Power Plant, Boosting Borno’s Economy and Security Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving ₦68 billion in operational support for the Maiduguri Emergency Power Plant (MEPP).

The funding, which includes a monthly operational expenditure allocation of ₦2 billion from March 2026 to December 2028, is aimed at sustaining the plant’s operations and bridging existing funding gaps. 

Governor Zulum described the intervention as timely and impactful, noting that it will significantly improve electricity supply, strengthen security, and enhance economic activities across Borno State. The Maiduguri Emergency Power Plant was established in 2021 as a presidential intervention following the destruction of critical power infrastructure by insurgents, which left the state without electricity for nearly two years. 

According to the governor, the project implemented through the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL)—has played a vital role in restoring stable power to Maiduguri and surrounding communities. Since its commissioning in 2021 and subsequent upgrade to a 50-megawatt capacity in December 2023, the power plant has driven socio-economic growth, created jobs, and provided much-needed support to small and medium-sized enterprises throughout the state. Zulum also emphasized that improved access to electricity has contributed to enhanced security by promoting economic resilience and reducing the vulnerabilities often associated with insurgency and criminal activity. 

He expressed appreciation on behalf of the government and people of Borno State, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to collaborating with the Federal Government to ensure sustainable energy development, lasting peace, and continued prosperity in the region.
